Who is Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) (Subclass 482) visa suitable for?
Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) (Subclass 482) visa is suitable for applicants who have an eligible employer who can be their sponsor for this visa.
There are a few key benefits of a Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) (Subclass 482) visa. There are 3 different streams to apply for this visa. There is a pathway to permanent residency (PR). Unlike the Skilled Migration visas, applicants for employer sponsored visas do not require points or submit an EOI before they can apply for the visa.
482 Main Eligibility
- There are 3 streams to this visa: Short-term stream, Medium-term stream, and Labour Agreement stream
- Requires an approved nomination by an approved business sponsor
- Has skills, qualifications and employment background to perform the nominated occupation (may require a positive skills assessment)
- Both the nominated position and the applicant’s intention to work in this position are genuine
- For Short-term stream:
- at least 2 years experience working in nominated occupation or related field
- has achieved required English test scores
- be a genuine applicant for entry and stay as a short term visa holder
- For Medium-term stream:
- at least 2 years experience working in nominated occupation or related field
- has achieved required English test scores
- For Labour Agreement stream:
- the sponsor has a labour agreement
- at least 2 years experience working in nominated occupation or related field (exceptions apply)
- has achieved required English test scores
482 Main Conditions
- Must work only in the nominated occupation identified in the application
- Work only for your sponsor or associated entity, unless you are exempt
- If employment has ceases, the period must not exceed 60 consecutive days
Did you know for 482?
- Required English test scores differ. For IELTS test scores, you require at least 5 overall and at least 4.5 for each component if you are applying for Short-term stream stream. However, you will require at least 5 overall and 5 for each component if you are applying for Medium-term stream. For Labour agreement, the English requirement may be specified in the agreement
- For short-term stream, must have an occupation on the STSOL list. For medium-term stream, you you must have an occupation on the MLTSSL list.
- You may be eligible to apply for permanent resident visas (e.g. Subclass 186 or 187)

Health Requirement
You and your family members may be required to take a health examinations to meet the health requirement to show that you are free from any disease or condition that is:
- a significant healthcare and community service cost to the Australian community
- likely to limit the access of Australian citizens and permanent residents to healthcare and community services that are in short supply by placing demand on those services.
Your health examination will include the standard medical examination. Additional tests (such as TB Screen test, chest x-ray, and HIV test) will be required by different age groups. In some circumstances, you may be required to take additional tests such as: hepatitis B and C test, syphilis test, HIV test, and tests that address your specific health risks.
Character Requirement
You must be of good character and pass the character test. There are a number of circumstances where you may not pass the character test. For example, if you have a substantial criminal record. A substantial criminal record means if you have been:
- sentenced to death or imprisonment for life
- sentenced to a term of imprisonment of 12 months or more
- sentenced to two or more terms of imprisonment (even if served concurrently) where the total is 12 months or more
- found by a court to not be fit to plead in relation to an offence but found to have committed the offence and detained in a facility or institution
You may be required to obtain one or more documents to prove your character, such as: a police certificate, Form 80, character statutory declaration, military certificate, or a letter of good conduct from an employer.
