Certain work and business visas require an Expression Of Interest (EOI) to be submitted. This is a points system and invitations depend on the points a potential visa applicant can score. The higher score, then better chance of an invitation. Here is an explanation of how it works.

You must score a minimum of 65 points before you can even submit your EOI. There are a number of categories where you can try to get more points. For work visas, if you are a young, well educated, and experienced professional with good English proficiency, then you should do well. Therefore, some of the main categories to get points are: Age, English Proficiency, Employment and Education. Within each of these categories, there is a range of points you can potentially get. For example, if you are have over 8 years of overseas work experience, you get the maximum of 15 points within the Overseas Employment category. You can get additional points if you have also worked in Australia.

When you are considering an EOI, at that point in time, there is probably not a lot you can do to get additional points. However, you can try to get more points in the English Proficiency category. Maybe do some revision, or take some English classes before you attempt your English test such as IELTS. You can get a maximum of 20 points if you get “Superior” English. If you are doing IELTS, that equates to a score of 8. If you are currently on an IELTS 6.5 score, doing these revisions may take you to a 7 score. A 7 score will get you 10 points; a 6 score gets you no points. Starting November, 2019, it is easier to get more points if you consider applying for the regional work visa. Working in regional Australia gets you additional 15 points.

Submitting your EOI with the minimum 65 points probably will not get you an invitation anytime soon. You are competing with other potential visa applicants, and many of them may have more points than you. In fact, since the start of the 2019-20 migration year from July, 2019, minimum points required for Subclass 189 invitations ranged from 80 to 95.

If you looking for a Business and Investment visa, then there are different categories used to calculate your points for the EOI. We will talk about that some other time.
