Occupation Lists for Australia Skill Migration

For Australian points-tested skill migration, applicants must have an occupation that closely matches an occupation in the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO). Once this occupation is identified, the applicant must do a skills assessment. For migration purposes, occupations are grouped into different occupation lists. This is important for an applicant as different occupation lists affect which points-tested skill work visa they can apply. For example, the Accountant occupation belongs in the MLTSSL, and therefore, the points-tested skill work visa they can apply are subclass 189, 190, and 491.

There are 3 occupation lists relevant to points-tested work visas. They are:

  1. Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)
  2. Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL)
  3. Regional Occupation List (ROL)

As mentioned earlier, subclass 189, 190 and 491 work visas are available to MLTSSL occupations (e.g. Registered Nurse). Only 190, and 491 (State Nomination stream) are available to STSOL occupations (e.g. Web Designer). Only subclass 491 (State Nomination stream) is available to ROL occupations (e.g. Market Research Analyst). Therefore, an occupation on the MLTSSL gives the applicant more choices. In terms of number of occupations available in each occupation list, STSOL has a slight advantage over MLTSSL (215 and 212 respectively). ROL is a much smaller list of only 77 occupations.

Lastly, if the applicant is applying for a State Nominated visa (i.e. subclass 190, or 491 State Nomination stream), each State may also have their own State Occupation Lists which the applicant must refer to. These lists will show which occupations each State is open for nomination.
