New Second Temporary Graduate Visa Subclass 485

The Australian government has recently announced that certain Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate Visa (TGV) holders can apply for a second TGV. The new rules will begin in 2021.

Who is eligible?

TGV holders on the post-study work stream who have graduated from a regional educational institution (or a regional campus of a metropolitan university) and have lived in regional Australia on their TGV will be eligible for a second TGV.

Students who have studied and lived in specified regional areas (i.e. Category 2 – Cities and Major Regional Centres, and Category 3 – Regional Centres) will be eligible for an additional 1 or 2 years respectively on their second TGV.

What is the visa condition?

Those eligible for a second TGV will be required to remain in a regional area for the duration of their new visa.

What are the eligible regional areas?

  • Category 1 – ‘Major Cities’ of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane do not receive any regional incentives
  • Category 2 – ‘Cities and Major Regional Centres’ of Perth, Adelaide, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Canberra, Newcastle/Lake Macquarie, Wollongong/Illawarra, Geelong and Hobart
  • Category 3 – ‘Regional Centres and Other Regional Areas
